How to Order Low Carb at a Sub Shop
Sub shops are better for low-carb eating than they look, because the entire menu is built from components that get assembled to order. You are not asking for anything unusual.
The three formats
In order of how much they remove:
- Sub in a tub — all filling, no roll, same price. The cleanest option.
- On a salad — same filling over a lettuce base, slightly more volume.
- Wrap — lighter than a roll but still a meaningful carb source. A compromise, not a solution.
The two things people forget
Sweet dressings and sauces carry sugar. Buffalo sauce, honey mustard and some chipotle mayos all add more than expected — oil and vinegar does not.
Sweetened iced tea is the other one. A cup carries around 120 calories almost entirely from sugar, and it is easy to order on autopilot. Unsweetened is nearly free.
A reliable order
Roast beef or turkey in a tub, extra vegetables, oil and vinegar, no cheese if you are being strict or provolone if you are not, with a pickle spear on the side and unsweetened tea. Filling, cheap, and it works at any location without explanation.
Frequently asked
Do they charge extra for a tub?
No, it is priced the same as the sub.
Are the meats carb-free?
Deli meats are very low but not always zero — some carry small amounts from curing. Practically, the dressings and drinks matter far more.
What about the pickle?
A spear is around 15 calories with negligible carbohydrate. It is the best low-carb side available.
