Sub Sizes and Prices: Mini vs Regular vs Giant

Three sizes, and the price does not scale in a straight line with the food. That is the whole reason this decision is worth thinking about for thirty seconds rather than defaulting to a regular every time.

The calorie figures below are the official ones for each size, which makes the comparison concrete rather than a matter of opinion. A giant Club Supreme is not roughly twice a regular — it is 2,210 calories against 1,160, and knowing that changes how you order it.

The three sizes

A mini is around five inches, a regular around seven, and a giant about fourteen. Not every item is offered in every size — the hot subs and cheese steaks generally start at regular, while the cold subs run across all three.

Calories by size, using real figures

This is where the sizes stop being abstract. These are the official per-size calorie counts for a representative sub from each category.

  • A mini is roughly 55 to 60% of a regular, not 70% — the filling does not scale with the bread.
  • A giant is close to double a regular, sometimes slightly under.
  • The Club Supreme giant at 2,210 calories is the single heaviest item on the menu.

When the mini is the right call

The mini is the honest choice if you routinely leave part of a regular. You are paying about two-thirds the price for about 55 to 60% of the calories, and nothing goes in the bin.

It stops making sense if you finish a regular comfortably. A mini leaves most adults short, they add chips to compensate at around $2.29 and 220 calories, and the saving evaporates while the calorie count barely moves.

It is also the sensible children's option, and the kids meal bundles a mini-size sub with chips, a drink and a cookie in the 400 to 630 calorie range depending on what is chosen.

When the giant is genuinely worth it

Shared between two people, clearly. A giant costs roughly double a regular but is built with proportionally more filling, so two people splitting one get more each than they would from two regulars, for less total money. It is the clearest value play on the board and it needs no promotion.

Eaten alone across two sittings, the economics still work but the food does not. The roll softens in the fridge overnight and dressed vegetables weep into the bread, so the second half is a noticeably worse sandwich. If you are doing this deliberately, ask for the dressing on the side and apply it to each half as you eat.

Above three people the arithmetic shifts again toward catering boxes priced per head, which generally undercut giants and arrive with the sides included.

The format choice matters more than the size

Any sub can be ordered as a wrap or in a bowl at the same price, and the bowl is the single largest calorie reduction available anywhere on the menu.

Ordering in a bowl subtracts 290 calories. That is more than the difference between a mini and a regular on most subs — so if the reason you were considering a mini was calories rather than appetite, a regular in a bowl gets you further and leaves you fuller.

A wrap adds 20 calories against the standard sub, which makes it effectively neutral. Wraps are worth choosing for how they handle dressing rather than for any nutritional advantage.

Bread choice and price

White is the default and the basis for every calorie figure quoted here. Wheat is equivalent in practice.

Rosemary Parm adds 45 calories at regular size and costs nothing extra. Udi's Gluten Free subtracts 55 calories at regular but adds $1.50 to a regular and $3 to a giant — the only bread choice that changes the price.

Worth knowing if you are ordering gluten free for a group: that surcharge applies per sub, so it adds up faster than people expect on a catering order.

Frequently asked

How big is each size?

A mini is around five inches, a regular around seven, and a giant about fourteen.

Is a giant cheaper than two regulars?

Per person, generally yes, and you get more filling each. That advantage disappears if one person eats it across two days.

How many calories is a giant?

Roughly double a regular. A giant Turkey & Provolone is 1,520; a giant Club Supreme is 2,210, the heaviest item on the menu.

Which sizes are available for hot subs?

Hot subs and cheese steaks generally start at regular. The cold subs run across mini, regular and giant.

Does the bowl option cost less?

No, it is the same price as the sub. It subtracts 290 calories, which is the largest single reduction available.

Does gluten-free bread cost extra?

Yes — around $1.50 on a regular and $3 on a giant. It also subtracts 55 calories at regular size.
