How Many Calories Are in an Italian Sub?

How Many Calories Are in an Italian Sub?

A regular Italian sub lands at roughly 910 calories. That figure surprises people in both directions: some expect a cured-meat sub to be worse, others assume a sandwich cannot possibly reach nine hundred.

The useful part is not the number itself but the breakdown, because it tells you which changes are worth making and which are theatre.

Where the 910 actually comes from

The roll is the single largest component before any filling goes on. A standard white sub roll carries a substantial share of the total, which is why the same sub ordered in a tub or on a salad drops so dramatically.

Cured meats are second. Salami, pepperoni and cappacuolo are fat-dense by nature — that is what makes them taste the way they do — and the Italian carries five of them.

Cheese and oil split the remainder. Provolone adds roughly 80 to 100, and the olive oil blend in the standard finish adds meaningfully more than the vinegar does.

The three changes that actually matter

In descending order of effect:

  • Order it in a tub or on a salad — removes the roll entirely, at the same price.
  • Skip the cheese — around 80 to 100 calories for a change most people never consider.
  • Ask for light oil, extra vinegar — keeps the flavour profile and drops most of the added fat.

How it compares on the board

The Italian is not the heaviest thing available. The hot subs run higher, with the Big Kahuna Cheese Steak above 1,080 and the Meatball and Cheese around 1,050.

Against the cold board it sits near the top, with the Club Supreme at roughly 950. The Veggie at around 480 and the BLT at under 600 are the light end.

Frequently asked

Is the Italian sub the highest-calorie item?

No. Several hot subs are higher, including the Big Kahuna Cheese Steak at around 1,080 and the Meatball and Cheese at around 1,050.

How many calories in a mini Italian?

Roughly two-thirds of a regular, so in the region of 600, though the ratio varies because filling does not scale exactly with bread.

Does Mike's Way add many calories?

The vegetables add almost nothing. The olive oil blend is the part that counts — asking for light oil and extra vinegar keeps the taste and removes most of the addition.
